Community Ride: Maple Ridge 101 (2021)
For our first community ride this summer, we’re repeating a past favourite: the Maple Ridge 101, an inclusive bike ride that’s all about showing off good routes for getting around by bike in Maple Ridge. The ride takes place Sunday, August 1, 2021 at 2pm.
Since we last held this ride, many of us purchased bikes as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown. Another change is that we’ve seen many large housing developments added to our city, and with it considerably more vehicle traffic on our roads. If you’re new to our area, if you have a new bike and are looking for good routes to take it on, or if you’re looking for ways to leave your car or truck at home, this ride can help introduce you to routes you may not know about. Chances are there’s a bike path in or near your neighbourhood that can connect you to shops, restaurants, and community centres.
This year we’re changing the route used in previous years by reversing it. We found that the long eastbound uphill on 123rd Avenue from 207th to Laity was challenging for some riders, so changing direction results in a lesser inclines.
Our route takes in downtown Maple Ridge and areas to the west. We’ll meet at the Bandstand at Memorial Peace Park, cycle through downtown on 224th, take the 122/123 bike routes west to 203rd, south past Westgate into Hammond, east past the hospital toward Haney, and back into downtown, finishing at the family-friendly Witch Craft Pub for refueling and socializing.
This will be a casually paced ride. For legal reasons, we must ride in groups with a maximum size, so it is important to register and not just turn up at the event so we know how many riders to expect. Registration is done via our event page.
Helmets are mandatory. Consider bringing water, snacks, sun screen, and, if you are going to the Witch Craft afterwards, a bike lock.
We’ll be observing social distancing on the ride. As we gather at the Memorial Peace Park bandstand, please keep 2 meters away from others outside of your group/bubble. Riders must agree to and sign a Hub waiver form before the ride.
If this sounds fun, join us August 1st!
