How Last-Mile Bike Connections Vastly Extend Public Transit Network
Why should cities invest in cycling infrastructure, bike parking, and bike-sharing as first/last-mile solutions?
Because doing so vastly extends the reach of public transit, reduces congestion, and creates more equitable access to opportunities—especially for those who don’t have the privilege of living near transit hubs.
A recent webinar organized by HUB Cycling delved into this topic, highlighting how cycling can significantly enhance public transit networks. The session featured Chris Bruntlett, a Vancouver native now living in the Netherlands, who shared insights from one of the world’s most successful bike-transit integration models. Drawing from the Netherlands’ extensive experience, the webinar explored key strategies for designing seamless connections between cycling and public transportation.
This topic is especially timely for Maple Ridge. Take a look at the maps above and consider the significance of this moment—we are on the verge of welcoming Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) to our community. To fully leverage this investment, we must proactively plan for safe and convenient cycling access within the catchment areas of the planned BRT stations (203 St, 207 St, Laity St, 216 St, and Haney Place Mall). Additionally, secure bike parking at these locations will be essential to making multimodal travel a viable and attractive option.
