Making Golden Ears Park Safer and More Accessible for Cyclists: Feedback
Golden Ears Park is one of the most beautiful outdoor destinations in Metro Vancouver, drawing thousands of visitors each year. But if you’ve ever tried to bike there, you know it’s not exactly a cyclist’s paradise. The only road into the park is narrow, busy, and unsafe for anyone traveling on two wheels. Between speeding vehicles, large RVs, and trailers hauling boats, the experience is far from the peaceful, nature-filled ride it should be.
To improve conditions for those who would like to visit the park by bike as an alternative, our HUB Cycling local committee recently took the opportunity to provide feedback to the BC Ministry of Environment and Parks, which is engaging the public on its Golden Ears Provincial Park Recreation Facility Plan.
Below is a summary of the key recommendations. The official feedback can be read here.
At HUB Cycling Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows, we believe that getting to the park should be safe and accessible for everyone—not just those with a car. That’s why we’re advocating for dedicated cycling infrastructure, better transit options, and a safer, more sustainable way to access Golden Ears Park.
How Can We Make It Safer?
- Separate Cycling Route: Instead of adding another car road, we need a dedicated multi-use path away from the main road. This would allow cyclists and pedestrians to travel safely while also serving as an emergency access route.
- Shuttle Service & Micromobility: A transit or shuttle bus could help people get to the park without needing a car, reducing traffic and parking congestion. With the rise of e-bikes and other small mobility devices, more people can take advantage of active transportation options.
- Bike Parking & Camping: More people would cycle to the park if they had a secure place to lock their bikes. We also support a “no-turn-away” policy for bike campers—ensuring those who travel by bike always have a spot to stay.
The Bigger Picture: Cycle Tourism & Sustainability
Cycling tourism is a major economic driver, with millions of Canadians traveling by bike every year. Making Golden Ears Park a bike-friendly destination would benefit local businesses, encourage eco-friendly travel, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
