Maple Ridge Bike to School Week and Active School Travel
Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadowns 2024 Bike to School Week
Congratulations to the 10 schools in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge that participated in Bike to School Week which was held June 3-7th. This is up from 6 schools that participated last year in our school district so this is fantastic!
Bike to School Week is an event that is organized annually to encourage students to bike, walk and roll to and from school. The event is a fun, free, week-long celebration put on by HUB Cycling.
- Benefits of participating include:
- Students arrive energized and ready to learn
- Reduced congestion and cleaner air around schools
- An increased sense of school community
- A tangible green initiative that can be connected to your school’s sustainability
curriculum - A chance to win HUB Bike Awards and prizes!
Active School Travel (AST)
As schools increasingly participate in Bike to School Week, we see more and more parents asking about how to promote year round AST at their school. They understand that AST has been shown to have these beneficial effects on children:
- improvement in physical and mental health
- decreased traffic pollution
- safer school zones and communities
- better academic performance
Your local Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge HUB Committee is committed to meet with any parents, teachers, or school officials to provide resources and support if your school would like to see more students actively transporting themselves to and from school. There are a number of toolkit as well as grant money available that can help your school set goals to increase AST.
If you are interested or know of anyone at your school who is interested in promoting AST at your school, please send us an email at mapleridge-pittmeadows@bikehub.ca and we would be happy to collaborate with you!
