New Multiuse Path along 132/Fern Crescent
Construction has started which will see a separated multiuse path along 132nd Ave/Fern Crescent.
The new 3m-wide asphalt multiuse path, which comes with lighting, will generally follow the existing trail through Maple Ridge Park from 232th Street to Cross’s Cabin Park. Another multiuse path section will also be laid along Balsam Street from 132 Ave. to Larch Ave to provide access to the main multiuse path.
Our HUB Committee would have liked to see protected bike lanes, since in the summer months pedestrian traffic can be quite busy, and having a shared facility for people walking and wheeling can be problematic. But there is literally no space to spare along Fern Crescent. The community understandably wants to preserve the beautiful tall trees that line the roadway along this route. At least a multiuse path offers a much safer option for people cycling than the narrow unprotected shoulder along Fern Crescent.
We’ve been told that the multiuse path will be connected to the future 240th St. bridge across the Alouette once that project gets the go-ahead in future years.
The current project also provides a roundabout at Fern Crescent and 236 Street, improved cyclist and pedestrian crossings as well as traffic calming measures.
Construction is expected to continue through to the end of June next year. During that time, single lane alternating traffic will be in effect on occasion.
